There are more spots to see in East Istanbul!

イスタンブールのヨーロッパ側の東にもまだまだ見所はいっぱい。

East Istanbul is a residential area.
Away from Sultanahmet where is very busy with people, it's pretty quiet.
And there are some Byzantine remains in this area.


スルタンアフメットからの観光客や市街の喧騒から離れて一転、この辺りは住宅街で静か。
そんな中に東ローマ帝国の遺跡がぽつんぽつん、とある。

Chora Church (Kariye Muzesi)　　カーリエ博物館

It used to be a Byzantine monastery and converted into a mosque in the Ottoman era, and it became a museum in 1948.
The mosaics and frescos were plastered when it was a mosque, but they were restored beautifully.
I was stunned by the huge scale of Ayasophia, but these frescos and mosaics also blew me away.
They are so beautiful that you can stay there for long, enough to hurt your neck!


東ローマ帝国の修道院で、その後モスクになったけれど、その美術的価値が認められ、博物館としてオープン。
モザイクも漆喰で塗りつぶされていたらしいけど、復元された。
アヤソフィアはそのスケールに圧倒されたけれど、こちらはフレスコ画、モザイク画に圧倒。
あまりにもきれいに残っており、絵で埋め尽くされた教会は長時間いても飽きないので、首が痛くなっちゃう。

Pammakaristos Church (Fethiye Camii)　　　ファーティエ・ジャーミィ

On the way to Fatih Camii from Chora Church, a couple of tourists told us "there is a nice Byzantine church as well".
It's a very cosy church, but there is very beautiful mosaics.
Unlike Chora Church, which was full of tourists, it was very quiet, there was only another couple of tourists and us, and a few cats :)
We could spend the time there with relaxing.

カーリエ博物館からファーティ・ジャーミィへ行く途中に出会った観光客の人に、「ここにもビザンツのステキな教会があるわよ」と教えてもらった。
小さいくこじんまりとはしているけれど、ここにもかなりきれいなモザイク画が残っている。
観光客でいっぱいのカーリエ博物館と違って、ここにはもう一組の観光客と私たち、そして猫だけ。
ゆっくり鑑賞できた。

Fatih Mosque (Fatih Cami)　　　ファーティフ・ジャーミィ

It's a big mosque in the residential area.
There were almost only local people there.

住宅街の中にある大きなモスクで、観光客よりも断然、地元の人が多い。

Suleymaniye Mosque (Suleymaniye Camii)　　　スュレイマニエ・ジャーミィ

This huge mosque is on the top of the hill in Istanbul, built in the 16th century.
The architect is the famous Mimar Sinan, who also built Rustem Pasha Mosque.
From the mosque, you can see the great view of Bosphorus Sea.


イスタンブールの高台に立つ、１６世紀完成のモスク。
リュステム・パシャ・ジャーミィを手がけた名高い建築家が立てたことでも有名。
モスクからはボスフォラス海峡が眺められる。

 

Grand Bazaar (Kapalicarsi)　　　グランドバザール

This is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world.
Unfortunately, we couldn't get inside as it was closed for all 4 days during our stay in Istanbul because of the Eid.
There were some shops opened outside of the bazaaar.
But I really wanted to see the inside since it was very historical building.


中東最大と言われる屋根付き市場。
残念ながら、滞在中はEidで入ることが出来ず、中も見ることができなかった。
まわりのお店はちょこちょこ開いていたので雰囲気はなんとなくつかめたけれど、
ショッピングよりも、建物自体が古そうだったので中も見てみたかった。
