Cafe*The Needlemakers Cafe @Lewes

先日訪れたアンティークの町、ルイスの中心に大きな古いビルがあります。

There is a big old building in the centre of Lewes, where we visited last week.

ギャラリーや、お店、カフェが入った複合施設。

とっても古いビルで、何百年も前のものだそう！

もとはろうそく工場だったところに、
第１次世界大戦時に針工場がロンドンから疎開してきて、
そこからThe Needlemakersの名前を取ったそう。


It's a commercial complex included a cafe, galleries, shops.
The building was so old, built hundreds years ago!
It used to be a candle factory, then the needle factory moved from London during WWⅠ,
their name was taken from that.

床などもとっても古くて、きっと当時のもの!

地下にはこれまた古い井戸。

私は隣のアンティークショップが気になってあまり見てなかったのですが、
私が見てる間に相方さんはこの古い井戸に興味津々で、
アンティークショップのオーナーとおしゃべり。

オーナーによると、
井戸はこの建物ができた当時のもので、とーーっても深いんだけれど、
針工場が移転してからは使われなくなってごみ入れにされてしまって、
もうブロックされてしまい、水が見えない、とのこと。


The floor is so old, it must be from when it's built!
There is an old well in the basement.
I didn't really see it because I was looking in the antique shop next to the well,
my partner was interested in it so he was talking to the owner of the shop
while I was in the shop.
 According to the owner,
the well was built when that building was built.It is very very deep. 
However, after the needle factory moved in, they didn't use the well any more,
then they started throwing rubbish in it.
Now, the well is blocked, you can't see water any more.



さて、建物の歴史はさておき、お茶しましょうか!

History aside, shall we have tea?

 

古いブリックの壁と色鮮やかな壁でカラフル＆ヴィンテージな感じが良いです。

Old brick wall and vivid coloured wall.  Nice.

壁には古いカードや、ヴィンテージがアイテムが。かわいい！

There were some vintages and old cards on the wall.  Cute!

 もちろん、ケーキもよりどりみどりでございますよ～!

ああ～、田舎のクリームティーは本当においしいので、
クリームティーかケーキ、いつも迷ってしまう!!


Of course,they have so many variety of cakes!!
Ah,  I always can't decide cream tea or a cake.
 Especially in the countryside where you can always have nice cream tea.

相方さんは普段田舎に来ると、たいていクリームティーなのですが、
このときは二人とも甘いもの気分。

私は手前のアップル・シナモンケーキ。

相方さんは奥の、キャロット＆ウォルナッツ＆バナナ？ケーキ。

どちらもしっとり＆ふわふわで、
（シフォンみたいなスカスカでなく、ちゃんと食べ応えありのふわふわ。 ）
相方さん、思わず唸る!!

最近ケーキ作りで、うまく膨らまない、と壁を感じていた相方さん。

キッチンスタッフを捕まえて、
どんなマジックを使ったの?　どこのベーキングパウダー使ってるの?
と質問攻め。

「いや～、普通のベーキングパウダーですけど…」と、スタッフさんもちょっとびっくりだった様子。

あんまりまぜすぎないで、というヒントを得た相方さん、
ここのようなケーキを焼くぞ!　と意気込んでいました。

でも本当においしかった～！　今度はスコーンを試したい!

だけど、ルイスにはまだまだかわいいカフェがたくさんあるので、
次回は別のところに行ってみたいと思います!


My partner usually have cream tea when he come to the countryside,
but both of us felt like sweets.
I chose apple & cinnamon cake, he chose carrot & walnuts cake.
They were moist and soft!!
My partner couldn't suppress a grunt of admiration.
He was troubled with baking, his cake didn't rise.
He caught a kitchen staff and asked her,
"What magic did you use?, what kind of baking powder are you using?"
"I use normal baking powder......" she said, looked surprised.
She also gave him a tip, "not to stir too much"
he was eager to bake again.
Their cakes were REALLY yummy.  I would like to try scones next time!!
But there are more cute cafes in Lewes,
so I guess we try another cafe when we visit there next time.
